How Inakay Began

The vision to start a project began in January 6, 2005 when Manila Bible Institute, whose students handle worship service once a month at the Women Institute of Correction in Metro Manila invited Cleo Undheim to speak at one of their prison outreach ministry sessions. She asked the pastor in charge how Manila churches are supporting these women after their prison terms are finished, and how their families - especially their children are being sustained. The answer was “they are not.” She went back home with a heavy heart for them. For an entire week, the thought about “nothing is being done” kept her restless. Tim Undheim was supportive of the idea of starting a homes project; however it was a big project to process. She began to share the idea to close friends and received positive responses. After many prayers with friends, Ina-Inakay Center, Inc. was born.

Cleo and Tim Undheim who founded this ministry wish to acknowledge their co-founders who gave financially to start Inakay namely, Rev. Tim and Karen Zerger who are currently pastoring Havre Alliance Church; IFAP - Phil Skellie, Director; children of Mercy Point in Ohio led by my good friend Barbara Cloninger.
The first board of trustees which Tim and Cleo are part of include mostly friends of theirs: Arlene Astoveza, Ambrosio Allipin, Michele Clinton, Percy Cruz, Rosalina Dedel, Teresa Ingal, Robinson Isip, and Nancy Somosa,

We started with seven children on the first quarter of the school year June 2006- March 2007 then added 26 more on the second quarter for a total of 33 children. In October 2006, we realized that the financial allowance to the children is not enough for their daily sustenance so we started the “Ii loan for micro business project.” In October 2007, we ventured in a feeding and teaching program for 3-6 year olds and had parenting classes to a very poor group of people. To date we serve 40 children; 30 mothers and 32 guardians with about 4 people in each guardian family. We also assist a small church who minister to other prison inmates – around 200 attendees. Our ministry in three years have reached out to at least 500 people.
